About

The Gandhi Study Circle at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College strives to foster a safe and vibrant intellectual space for exploring and engaging with the ideas and philosophy of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, widely regarded as the foremost visionary of India and the father of the nation. Known as ‘Bapu’ and ‘Mahatma,’ Gandhi played a pivotal role in shaping modern India, not only as a freedom fighter but also as a philosopher, social reformer, lawyer, and theorist. His contributions to the Indian nation remain unparalleled.

In today’s fractured world, revisiting Gandhi’s thoughts is more relevant than ever. His principles of truth, non-violence, village-based governance, the fight against untouchability, and interfaith harmony offer timeless guidance. Gandhi’s ability to seek mutual respect amidst disagreements stands as a beacon for navigating contemporary challenges.

The Gandhi Study Circle is not a space for uncritical glorification or thoughtless criticism of Gandhi. Instead, it serves as a platform for critical discourse on one of history’s most influential figures, probing the relevance of his ideas in our times. Through this initiative, we aim to engage deeply with Gandhi’s vision and philosophy, examining them alongside the perspectives of his supporters and critics, both past and present.

Since its inception, the Gandhi Study Circle has hosted various activities to explore Gandhian philosophy and its practical applications. These include Sessions to understand the significance of the spinning wheel in Gandhi’s life, as well as essay-writing competitions, debates, and quizzes centered on his life and ideals. Creative events these have also played a role in propagating Gandhian values.

Gandhian philosophy is as vast and profound as an ocean, and the Gandhi Study Circle seeks to dive deep into its intricacies. This initiative is a scholarly endeavor to read, analyze, debate, and explore the multifaceted dimensions of Gandhi’s personality and philosophy, which remain profoundly relevant in today’s turbulent times.

Vision

The Gandhi Study Circle envisions itself as a platform for intellectual exploration and dialogue that delves deeply into the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi and his transformative life journey. Our mission is to foster an academic community where students and scholars come together to critically engage with Gandhian ideals of non-violence, truth, and social justice, and to explore how these principles resonate with and diverge from the ideas of other great philosophers of his time. Through this initiative, we aim to broaden perspectives and encourage rigorous inquiry into Gandhian philosophy, situating it within a global context of thinkers who have shaped modern consciousness. Our goal is not only to understand Gandhi ji's principles but to apply them meaningfully to contemporary issues, exploring their relevance in today’s world of social, environmental, and ethical challenges.

Mission

The society aims to propagate Gandhian values and philosophy amongst the student and teacher fraternity. It provides an active platform for students to understand, promote and practice the Gandhian ideology in modern times by organizing various activities such as seminars, cleanliness drives, street plays, reading sessions, discussion rounds, field trips, quizzes, creative writing, and debate competitions, around the year. Gandhi has touched upon a plethora of ideas and issues and the students of the society express a diverse opinion on various issues, at times expanding the Gandhian ideas.
