About

Vastram - The Sartorial Society of the college believes that clothing and dressing- as procedure and practice- is ART. The society gets its name from the word ‘vastra’ which means ‘fabric’ in Sanskrit. With ‘fabric’ as the nucleus of its expression, the society strives to create a widespread understanding about the evolution of “cloth” from being used as a ‘cover’ to “clothing” as an ‘expression of art’.

The exhibits, walks and fashion-installations are created through a long process, developing from inspiration, ideation, conceptualisation, creation and curation to exhibition. The entire process leads the students into a journey of understanding clothing from material to the finished product, its place in history, culture and finally in the growing market and fashion industry.

The society also regularly organises various workshops, lectures and visits on issues related to fast-fashion, textile discard and other industry related problems; it also tries to combat the same by creating awareness regarding sustainable fashion, handicraft and traditional sartorial practices.

Vision

Vastram envisions creating a perception of fashion that recognizes and appreciates the practice as an art form. While dressing up is an everyday activity, it continues to be categorized as ‘trivial’ and ‘unmindful.’ However, the act of putting oneself together is inherently meditative and profound. We aim to challenge this perception by nurturing a mindset that sees fashion as both ‘serious’ and ‘profound.’

Additionally, we aspire to build a college community that understands “fashion is for everyone.” From promoting body positivity to combating prejudices and stereotypes about ‘who can wear what,’ we seek to nurture an ideology that is inclusive and liberating.

Finally, Vastram’s intellectual stance aims to cultivate a generation of designers who grasp the significance of fashion within the broader spectrum of Visual Culture, Art, and Art Movements.
