About the Event

Two eminent alumni of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College (SGTB Khalsa College), Nausheen and Romit Bhatt  paid a visit to their alma mater on May 2, 2024, in order to engage in a stimulating conversation with the current students. In their academic and professional careers, both alumni achieved a major breakthrough when they passed the coveted Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam. The purpose of the event was to mentor and encourage students who wanted to pursue careers in the civil service.

On 2nd May, 2024 the history department of SGTB Khalsa college warm heartedly welcomed two of our graduates who cleared the esteemed UPSC civil service exam 2023 with flying colours. Nausheen, hailing from Gorakhpur, secured All India Rank (9) in the 2023 UPSC Civil Services Examination on her fourth attempt.

Romit Bhatt, graduated Khalsa college in 2021, and completed Masters in history from IGNOU in 2023. He has also cleared UGC NET JRF in history. In his third attempt, he secured All India Rank- 390 in CSE 2023.

Our department with pride welcomed them to have a one on one talk with the current batches of our history department on their methodories of study, goals, challenges and how they conquered them. It was an insightful talk and made the students pumped up for their resolve and goals regarding their futuristic goals. It was a realistic talk where they discussed the harsh realities of their struggle which together with their determination and strength with full fledged preparation led them to this pinnacle.

The event ended with questions put up by future upsc aspirants and the seniors answering them knowledgeably. Then, they were both felicitated by the department for their glorious achievements and the students bid adieu to them with glimmers of hope and confidence in their eyes. The visit by Nausheen and Romit Bhatt was a highly successful event, offering students valuable insights into the UPSC preparation process. Their stories of resilience and determination were a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance in achieving one’s goals. The session fostered a sense of motivation and provided practical tools for the students to navigate their own UPSC preparation journey.

About the Event:

The farewell for the batch of 2021-2024 was organized by the juniors on 13 May 2024 to bid a heartfelt goodbye to the graduating seniors. The event aimed to create meaningful memories with the seniors and hear about their experiences, including the lessons they learned from the discipline of history and their time in college.

The event began at 12:30 P.M. with a warm welcome by the 2nd-year students. The hosts addressed the audience, expressing the purpose of the gathering—to celebrate freshers stepping into a new phase of academic life and bid farewell to the graduating seniors who had left an indelible mark on the department.

Room 123 was beautifully decorated by the juniors in a yellow and black theme, providing a perfect backdrop for the day’s celebrations. A series of performances by talented students captivated the audience, adding energy and joy to the occasion. Several interactive games, such as Flip the Bottle, Musical Chairs, and Dumb Charades, were organized to create a lively atmosphere. A couple dance performance further uplifted the spirit of the event.

The highlight of the day was the awarding of special titles, including Mr. and Ms. Farewell, Mr. Handsome, Ms. Beautiful, and recognition for the senior with the "million-dollar smile." These moments brought happiness and pride to the graduating batch.  A "Memory Lane" was set up for each senior to share their most cherished memories.

Seniors were invited to share their reflections on their time at the department, recounting cherished memories and the lessons they had learned during their academic journey. Freshers and juniors were encouraged to share their experiences of transitioning from school to college, fostering connections across the batches. The presence of teachers made the event even more memorable, as they offered guidance and shared words of encouragement.

The event concluded with a delicious lunch, leaving everyone with full hearts and satisfied appetites. It was a day filled with emotions, gratitude, and joy—a perfect culmination of the seniors' journey at SGTB Khalsa College and a warm welcome for the new students into the History Department .

About the Event

The DASTAAN (History Department Society) elections at Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, University of Delhi, are a significant event for the students of the History Department. Held annually, the elections determine the student leaders who will guide and represent the department. This year’s election was particularly anticipated, as the previous year's election did not take place. The positions contested included President, Vice-President, Treasurer, General Secretary, and Joint Secretary. The event fosters democratic participation among students, with candidates presenting their manifestos to the department. The election process is conducted with transparency, with professors overseeing the voting process to ensure fairness.

On 6th September 2024, the much-awaited DASTAAN election for the History Department of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College was held. After the cancellation of last year's election, this event held particular significance. The elections were for the posts of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, General Secretary, and Joint Secretary. The polling booth was located in Room No. 108 of the Arts Block, and voting took place between 11:30 AM and 1:45 PM.

The election process was conducted by an election committee comprising two members from each year. Voting was done via a ballot system, with professors present to supervise. Voters were allowed to vote in pairs, and election committee members verified their IDs before issuing voting slips. Voters marked their choices with markers on the ballot paper.

The election results were announced later in the day, with the following students elected to the respective posts:

  • Vice-Presidents: Rehat Kaur (Senior) and Harshal Sharma (Junior)
  • Treasurer: Dilpreet Singh

Name of the Event: Freshers 2024 - अन्वेषण

अन्वेषण was this year's theme for the Freshers' event of 2024, organized to welcome new students into the Department of History. The event aimed to introduce freshers to their teachers and seniors, helping them feel comfortable in their new environment. A variety of activities were organized by seniors in collaboration with the faculty to make the moment memorable and enjoyable.

Entertainment activities organized by the seniors included engaging games like dumb charades and a lively couple dance competition, filling the room with laughter and joy. Performances by both seniors and juniors showcased their talents in dancing and singing, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere.

The presence of faculty members added a special touch to the event, as they actively participated in the celebration, mingling with the students and encouraging them. Prizes were awarded to Mr. and Ms. Fresher of the Year and the top performers, motivating everyone to give their best. Seniors ensured that freshers not only felt welcomed but also created cherished memories.

The efforts made by the seniors and faculty to make the freshers feel comfortable and valued made अन्वेषण a truly unforgettable experience. Name of the Event: Department Visit, 2024

Venue: National Museum and Purana Qila

About the Event

An educational visit was organized by DASTAAN for its members in 2024 to the National Museum and Purana Qila, with the aim of not just reading about history in books but engaging with it. Both places hold significant historical value. The exhibitions at the National Museum and the Mughal architecture of Purana Qila provided an opportunity to admire and gain a deeper understanding of India's glorious past.

The visit was scheduled from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. Students were instructed to gather in front of the college gate to board the bus. Travel tickets and refreshments were provided by the department to ensure students remained energized and focused throughout the day.

The first stop was the National Museum, where students embarked on a fascinating journey through history. The museum showcased a wide range of galleries, including the Harappan Civilization, the Gupta period, the Mughal era, and the Buddhist Gallery. Students were captivated by the ancient artifacts, sculptures of Buddha, and detailed exhibits of everyday life in ancient India. The Harappan artifacts, in particular, sparked discussions about the advanced urban planning and culture of one of the world's oldest civilizations. The Buddhist Gallery provided a serene and enlightening experience, offering a glimpse into the art, philosophy, and spirituality of the Buddhist tradition.

Faculty members and the museum guide played a crucial role in enhancing the learning experience. Their explanations provided context to the displays and encouraged students to think critically about the connections between historical events and their relevance today.

After the museum visit, students headed to Purana Qila, an impressive structure that stands as a testament to Mughal architecture. Walking through the fort's ancient walls, students could almost feel the echoes of the past. The intricate designs, sturdy structures, and scenic surroundings made it a memorable part of the trip. The group also enjoyed a brief storytelling session about the fort’s historical significance and the dynasties that left their mark on it.

Overall, the visit left students with a deeper appreciation for India’s historical and cultural legacy, making the trip both educational and inspiring. It was a perfect blend of learning, exploration, and enjoyment, sparking curiosity and a desire to learn more about history.

The Jodhpur trip, organized from 9th to 12th March 2023, was an unforgettable journey for the second- and third-year students of the History Honours department. This well-curated trip allowed the students to explore the vibrant Blue City, famous for its historic landmarks, royal palaces, and rich cultural heritage. With an itinerary that included iconic sites like Mehrangarh Fort and Umaid Bhawan, the trip blended history, exploration, and bonding. Faculty and students alike immersed themselves in the local cuisine, traditions, and lively markets, while creating memories that would stay with them long after their college years.

The Jodhpur trip, held from 9th to 12th March 2023, was a wonderful experience that brought together the second- and third-year students of the History Honours department. The trip was filled with historical exploration, cultural immersion, and valuable bonding moments. From the moment the students boarded the train from Delhi on the night of 9th March, there was an air of excitement. Conversations flowed easily, filled with laughter, as everyone looked forward to the adventure ahead. The train journey itself became a shared moment of camaraderie, with friends chatting, exchanging stories, and making memories even before reaching the Blue City.

Arriving in Jodhpur early in the morning on 10th March, the students were greeted by the warm sun and the city's lively atmosphere. After a quick refreshment and breakfast at the hotel, the group set out to explore the city’s famous landmarks. The first stop was Maha Mandir, where the students marveled at the beautiful 84-pillared architecture. The tranquility of the temple combined with the architectural grandeur left everyone in awe. Next, they explored Toorji Ka Jhalra, a centuries-old stepwell, an example of the city's blend of beauty and utility.

After an insightful morning, the students savored a traditional Rajasthani lunch that introduced them to local flavors. Dal Baati Churma and Gatte ki Sabzi stood out, giving everyone a true taste of Rajasthan’s rich culinary heritage. The warm, earthy flavors created an instant connection with the local culture, making it a special part of the trip.

In the afternoon, the group visited the majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace. The grandeur of the palace, with its royal architecture and lush gardens, captivated everyone. As students wandered through its opulent halls, they imagined the lifestyle of the erstwhile rulers. The palace offered a perfect combination of history and beauty, leaving a lasting impression on all who visited.

The evening was dedicated to exploring the local markets, including Ghantaghar and Nai Sadak. The colorful shops, filled with handicrafts, textiles, and jewelry, allowed students to immerse themselves in Jodhpur's vibrant culture. The hustle and bustle of the markets were a sensory delight, offering a peek into the life of the city. After a fulfilling day, the group returned to the hotel to reflect on their experiences over a warm dinner.

On 11th March, the group explored the towering Mehrangarh Fort, perched high above the city. As they walked through its massive walls and admired the intricate carvings, the students couldn’t help but feel connected to Jodhpur’s royal history. The panoramic views of the Blue City from the fort were breathtaking. Later, they visited Jaswant Thada, a peaceful marble cenotaph dedicated to the royal family.

The students then set off on a Blue City Walk, exploring the iconic blue-painted lanes that Jodhpur is known for. The picturesque surroundings were perfect for snapshots, creating memories that would last long after they left the city. Some local sweets made the walk even more delightful, offering a sweet taste of Jodhpur to complement the sights.

On the final day, 12th March, the students boarded the train back to Delhi, reflecting on the many experiences they had shared. The trip not only provided a chance to explore Rajasthan's rich history and culture but also allowed the students to bond with their seniors. It was clear that for the graduating seniors, this trip was a beautiful way to revisit memories and create new ones with their juniors. The trip, a perfect blend of learning, fun, and cultural immersion, would remain a cherished memory for all involved.

With this motive, DASTAAN, The History Society of SGTB Khalsa College, organized a career counseling session on April 10, 2023, titled "Job Prospects: Exploring Career Avenues with Alumni." The session brought together distinguished alumni and faculty members to guide students on various career options and provide inspiration for professional growth. It aimed to help students leverage their undergraduate experiences and remain adaptable in today’s competitive world.

During the interactive Q&A segment, students actively engaged with the speakers, seeking guidance on navigating career choices. A central message emerged: the need for adaptability and applying skills cultivated during undergraduate studies to thrive in dynamic professional spaces. The panel also highlighted that career paths are not always linear and encouraged students to remain open to exploring interdisciplinary opportunities.

On 15th April 2023, DASTAAN, the History Society of S.G.T.B. Khalsa College, organized a seminar featuring two distinguished professors, Prof. Arvind Sinha and Prof. Amar Farooqui. The event, which was open to all students of the University of Delhi, aimed to provide deeper insights into important historical topics. The two main themes discussed were:

1. The Golden Twenties in Germany: A Study of Weimar Culture

2. Empire and the East India Company

Both topics provided rich historical contexts, exploring cultural and political developments that have shaped modern history. The professors presented their expert perspectives, engaging the audience with their in-depth analysis and historical understanding.

The seminar, organized by DASTAAN on 15th April 2023, featured two renowned scholars—Prof. Arvind Sinha and Prof. Amar Farooqui—who delivered enlightening lectures on two significant historical topics.

Starting off with Prof. Arvind Sinha, he set the tone by examining the year 1919, a pivotal moment in German history. He discussed the repercussions of World War I and the formation of the Weimar Constitution, a period marked by the emergence of various political ideologies. One of the key themes he explored was the construction of women's emancipation, particularly through the notion of the "New Woman." Prof. Sinha elaborated on the bewildering complexity of political ideologies that shaped the state and influenced cultural patterns in Germany. He focused on the interplay between high and popular culture, highlighting trends such as cultural modernity, the Americanization of culture, state-funded art, and the visible corruption among the cultural elites. The emergence of gay clubs, entrenched prostitution, and exclusive cliques also came under discussion as symbols of this evolving culture. Prof. Sinha's lecture shed light on the golden aspect of Weimar culture, a period characterized by significant cultural achievements.

In the second session, Prof. Farooqui shifted the focus to the governance of the British East India Company. He discussed the company's operations, not only in the context of the colony but also within the framework of contemporary British parliamentary politics. Prof. Farooqui elaborated on the Regulating Act of 1773 and Pitt's India Act of 1784, explaining their role in overseeing the company, especially during the American War of Independence. He emphasized the necessity of scrutinizing and regularly monitoring the company's activities. Prof. Farooqui also discussed the challenges the company faced with wealth and governance and provided insights into its organizational structure, including the roles of writers, factors, junior merchants, and senior merchants.

On May 1st 2023, the History Honors department hosted Hasta La Vista in the seminar hall to bid a warm farewell to the graduating batch of 2020–2023. The seniors looked stunning in sarees and formals, lighting up the room. The day kicked off with some lighthearted games like musical chairs and bottle-flipping, followed by outstanding performances. The Bhangra dance was a crowd favorite, repeated multiple times as the audience cheered for more. The event wrapped up with a delicious lunch and an open DJ session, where faculty and students danced together, celebrating a memorable day.

The seniors arrived dressed to impress, with the girls looking stunning in sarees and the boys rocking their formals. Their arrival set the tone for an unforgettable day, one that would be remembered by all who attended. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, and the seminar hall was beautifully decorated, adding to the celebratory vibe.

The event began with warm speeches from faculty and juniors, acknowledging the impact the seniors had made over the years. From organizing events to leading trips like the memorable Jodhpur trip, the batch of 2020–2023 had been at the heart of so many moments that defined the History Honours community. Their contributions were celebrated with heartfelt words that set the perfect tone for the day. Then, the fun began. Games like musical chairs and the Flip the Bottle contest filled the room with laughter and lighthearted competition. Everyone, from students to faculty, got involved in the games, which helped break the ice and created a playful atmosphere that lasted throughout the day.

The performances that followed were the highlight of the event. The Bhangra dance was a crowd favorite. It was so good that it was performed several times, much to the delight of the audience, who cheered and clapped along. Even the principal joined in the applause, which just added to the excitement. The energy in the room was infectious, and it felt like the entire department was celebrating together.

Shivam Sir’s singing performance was another unforgettable moment. His soulful voice captivated the audience, bringing a sense of calm to the high-energy day. It was a beautiful reminder of how music can connect people and create lasting memories.

The seniors, in turn, shared their thoughts, reflecting on their time in the department. Their speeches spoke of friendships, lessons learned, and how much they had grown over the years. It was a heartfelt moment that reminded everyone of the incredible journey they had all been part of.

As the event came to an end, a hearty lunch was served, and everyone took the opportunity to mingle, share stories, and enjoy the delicious food. The final touch was the open DJ session, where both faculty and students danced together, enjoying the last moments of the day. It was a perfect way to end a remarkable celebration—full of joy, music, and memories that would last a lifetime.

On March 15, 2024, as part of Lashkara 2024, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College hosted Mosaic of Memories, organized by Dastaan, the Department of History Society. The event, centered around the theme Viksit Bharat, brought together students from all over Delhi University to reflect on how the lessons from India’s history can guide its future. The event featured two competitions: a Theme-Based Quiz and Creative Recitation. The day was filled with spirited participation, and winners were awarded prizes, with every participant receiving a certificate. The event concluded with refreshments, creating lasting memories for everyone.

On March 15, 2024, Mosaic of Memories was held as part of Lashkara 2024, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College’s annual festival. Organized by Dastaan, the Department of History Society, the event was designed to provoke thought on the theme Viksit Bharat—exploring how India’s past can shape a prosperous future by 2047, the centenary of its independence.

The event began with the Theme-Based Quiz, where 20 teams of two participants each competed. Five teams were from SGTB Khalsa College, with the others representing various Delhi University colleges. The quiz had three rounds, each filled with questions on India’s historical achievements and how they can influence today’s goals for national development. The competition was fierce, and in the end, the team from Motilal Nehru College claimed the first prize of ₹1,500, with the second prize of ₹1,200 awarded to another team. The quiz was not just a test of knowledge; it also encouraged intellectual engagement and fostered a deeper connection with India’s rich history.

The Creative Recitation segment followed, where participants presented original poetry and prose based on the event’s theme. Each performance brought a fresh perspective on how history has shaped the country and what role it can play in India’s future development. Harsh Yadav from Hansraj College won the first prize of ₹1,500 for his stirring recitation of Ranagan, a powerful, patriotic piece that resonated deeply with the audience. The second prize of ₹1,200 was awarded to another talented participant for their thought-provoking performance.

Throughout both competitions, the theme Viksit Bharat was a constant thread. It served as a reminder of the importance of learning from history and using that knowledge to shape the future. The quiz and recitation segments were not only about competition; they were about fostering a dialogue on India’s past and its potential for growth.

The event was a tremendous success, drawing students from colleges all over Delhi University. It was a day filled with intellectual stimulation, creativity, and camaraderie. The participants’ passion for the theme was evident, and the discussions sparked by the event will surely linger long after.
