About the Department

The Department of Punjabi, established in 1951, stands as a beacon of academic distinction and cultural heritage at our esteemed institution. With the inception of the B.A. (Hons.) Punjabi and M.A. Punjabi programs in 1954, the department embarked on a profound journey to cultivate a deep understanding of the language, literature, and cultural legacy of Punjab. The introduction of the Certificate Course in Punjabi in 2016 further exemplifies our unwavering commitment to the promotion and preservation of this language.

Our academic programs ensure a profound insight into the linguistic and literary traditions of Punjab. Under the guidance of our esteemed faculty, renowned for their scholarly brilliance and impactful research, students are nurtured to become thought leaders in their respective fields. The department has been shaped by the contributions of distinguished educators such as  Prof. Joginder Singh, Prof. Swaran Singh, Dr. Savinder Singh Uppal, Dr. Sunderjeet Kaur, Dr. Updesh Kaur, Dr. Vanita, Dr. Gurdip Kaur, Dr. Jaswinder Kaur, and Prof. Kuldeep Kaur Pahwa. These luminaries have not only excelled in academia but have also enriched Punjabi literature with their prolific writings, translations, and research.

The department has consistently produced exceptional students, many of whom have garnered university ranks and prestigious fellowships from the University Grants Commission. Our alumni, including renowned figures such as Dr. Amrik Singh Punni, Dr. Gurcharan Singh Arshi, Prof. Jaspal Kaur, Dr. Harmeet Singh, Dr. Bhupinder Pal Singh Bakhshi, and Dr. Harcharan Kaur, have risen to prominence in academia, literature, journalism, and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on their fields.

Our curriculum is robust and dynamic, as per the guidelines of NEP, The department offers a comprehensive range of courses that extend beyond Honors programs, incorporating Punjabi language instruction into interdisciplinary studies, ensuring that all students, regardless of discipline, are connected to their linguistic and cultural roots. As a minority institution, we take pride in empowering our students to master their mother tongue, fostering a deep sense of cultural pride and identity.

The departmental society, Firdaus - Punjabi Sahit Sabha, fosters a vibrant literary ecosystem that celebrates the richness of the Punjabi language and culture. By inspiring future generations to uphold and enrich this heritage, we aim to establish the Punjabi Sahit Sabha as a leading literary institution, recognized both nationally and internationally for its significant contributions to the literary world.

Moreover, the department regularly organizes a host of international and national conferences, seminars, workshops, and literary activities that contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the institution and encourage dialogue on important cultural and academic issues. With a progressive outlook the department continues to grow perpetually and expand the dimensions of studying and understanding literature through new methods and perspectives.
