Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College (SGTBKC), Delhi University organised a Panel Discussion, titled ‘The Long Road Ahead for Gender Equality’, to both commemorate the long history of the women’s movement for equality as well as deliberate on the possible ways the movement can evolve in the future. The event was organised by the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the college to celebrate the International Women’s Day on the 8th of March. The discussants of the event included Prof. Bijaylaxmi Nanda (the Principal of Miranda House, Delhi University), Adv. Kirti Singh, and Dr. Vinita Chandra (Associate Professor in English, Ramjas College, Delhi University) and was chaired by Prof. Surinder Kaur, the Officiating Principal of SGTB Khalsa College. The discussion began with Dr. Chandra recounting the history of the International Women’s Day. Despite the long history of struggle, Dr. Chandra added, women still aren’t faring better than what they did before feminism became a force to assert selfhood. Following Dr. Chandra, Ms.Kirti Singh, drawing upon her vast experience as a Supreme Court Advocate, spoke about the history and, subsequently, the shortcomings of constitutional laws to prevent marginalization and dehumanization of women. Citing a couple of famous court cases, Ms. Singh laid bare the primary acts in the Indian judicial system that have sought to safeguard the interests of women in the nation. Finally, Prof. Nanda spoke about her work upon how in different ways the girl child has been historically marginalized and, quite often, killed as a foetus. Like the previous speakers, Prof. Nanda delineated the politics of eugenics that underscore the sustenance and continuation of systemic patriarchal social structures. The Panel discussion ended with a round of questions from the students present in the audience: ranging through the topics of choice, gender neutrality, and the functions of ICCs in educational institutions. The event was ended by Dr. Rupali Sharma, Assistant Professor of Economics at SGTBKC, and the convener of the event with a personal thank you note to the panelists and the Principal of the college.
