Vision and Mission

Vision

In consonance with the Liberal Arts emphasis in the National Education Policy (2020), the Department of English envisages its own role as a nodal department within the institution. Its modules on communication, language learning, writing and presentation skills, SEL and cultural knowledge cater to the inculcation of foundational skills, civilisational values, emotional intelligence and multidisciplinary perspectives that form the basis of holistic undergraduate education and aid in higher levels of employability across all streams and disciplines taught in the College. Students from all programmes and streams are enrolled in the popular Valued-added, Skill-based as well as interdisciplinary Generic Elective courses offered by the Department. In the coming time, the Department also seeks to nurture interdisciplinary research at the undergraduate level by utilising the widespread research experience and academic specialisations of the current faculty. The Department seeks to collaborate with the College-based Guru Arjan Dev Teaching-Learning Centre to produce high quality multimedia content and MOOCs related to its available range of academic specialisations, that can eventually benefit a critical mass of interested learners outside the institution and feed into the robust environment of online learning.

Mission

As a nodal language department, the aims of ensuring linguistic competence and effective expressive skills govern the English Department's mission. In order to achieve this aim, the Department focusses on foundational skills like reading, listening and writing as well as advanced skills like rhetorical and contextual analysis of verbal and visual texts. The success of these aims inform the Department's long-term goal of producing humane, creative and versatile individuals who are able to integrate cultural knowledge with conventionally digital and AI-promoted media tools to produce excellent socially-relevant and accessible educational and journalistic content.
