About the Department

The Department of Physical Education was instituted with the college's inception. It was began with the singular aim of promoting sports and physical activities among the students of the college. Over time, the department became one of the best in the University and the college's unique selling point as SGTB Khalsa College became known for its sports and sports persons. The department has always sought to channelise the unlimited potential of the youth by harnessing it through their participation in Sports and Physical Activities during their student life. Since the department's growth has reached both national and international levels, it provides excellent and specialised infrastructures to its sports' students alongside much required financial assistance. The high performance training offered by the coaches and experts employed by the department has resulted in world renowned sportsmen and women like Mohinder Amarnath (Cricket), Ashok Dewan (Hockey), Harinder Singh (Hockey), Dalbir Singh (Wrestling). Shymalal Ji (Gymnast), Maninder Singh (Cricket). Kiran Sandhu (Basketball). Vijay Mala Bahnot (Shotput), and Amoj Jacob (Athletics) among others. These people have made both the department, the college, the university, and the country proud at various international sporting events and the medals that they have raked in in their respective fields. 

Outstanding students are offered recognition through stipends, medals, freeships, among others as per their achievements at various levels of participation. 

The Department Organises various high level sporting events across the year to promote these games and ensure a competition worth being spoken about across the nation. 

  • To offer a platform to upcoming cricketers, the department has organised a national T20 Floodlight Cricket Tournament by the name of "Sahibzada Zorawar SIngh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh T20 Tournament" since 2011.
  • An intercollege level Hockey and Basketball tournament titled "Baba Deep Singh Hockey and Basketball Tournament" since 2014 in both men and women category. 
  • An annual Khel Utsav, an inter-department sporting competition of the college to include all students of the college and display their sporting talents. 

The efficient coaches and faculty of the department, supported by Sports Board, are the backbone of the department to ensure the continuance of the quality that the Department of Physical Education of the college is known for. 

The Department of Physical Education offers equal oppurtunity to all the students of the college to join the college sports' teams through trials which happen at the beginnng of every year. The games for which the department offers its services are: Cricket, Hockey, Handball, Volleyball, Baseball, Basketball, Lawn Tennis, Athletics, Table Tennis, Badminton, and Chess. Alongside, there is also a high tech gymnasium and floodlights to train and organise day long sporting events. 

Attendance

Students admitted through the Sports' Quota of the college are required to attend 75% of the practice sessions and maintain a discipline in the submission of all Assignment in their academic departments. They are also required to participate in the competitions organised by the University as per the rules set by the University for students admitted through the Sports Quota. A relaxation of attendance is given on only active participations of the aforesaid competitions at inter-college, state, national, and international levels. Roll Numbers for semester exams are not given to those who fail to manage the minimum attendance requirement.

Timings

The training sessions begin from 7:00 AM and go up to 7:00 PM across various sports.
