: A forensic science orientation program for the Military Police Unit of the Indian Army was held at S.G.T.B.Khalsa College from July 25 to October 14, 2011. The army personnel were given training in different branches of forensic science. Forensic biology constituted an important part of the training course. As a part of this component, the personnel were imparted the basic knowledge of DNA typing. They were also trained in analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine and bile. Apart from the theory lessons, practical classes were held to demonstrate simple tests for identification of blood groups. In addition, the forensic importance of hair at crime scenes was highlighted. The features which distinguish human hair from the hair of other species were also defined.
The orientation in forensic biology was held under the aegis of the Star College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology. Short duration projects were also supported by this scheme. The laboratory facilities and
the infrastructure raised with the aid of star college scheme proved immensely beneficial for the army training program.
